Making music isn’t as easy as making babies

Music. Such an integral part of any film. You do realise it, if you are a movie buff or you love music. But when you are involved in making it or getting it composed, it’s a different ball game altogether.

Initially getting a music piece composed would be tricky. What we thought would go with the film, didn’t add any feelings to the film. So then we had to change it and look at it from a completely different perspective. A lot of times we would be stuck with the same film for weeks. We then used to take a break and come back to it after a few days!

The music composer, Gaurav Chatterji, would get a music composer’s block. But he never gave up! His passion and determination to make the best music for each and every film drove him till the end (and continues till now). Trust me when I say this, we have had him make no less than 8 to 10 completely new pieces for one of the films, before finalising anything. Our films being different from hardcore advertising, I think everyone involved needs to find their own muse from the film (or for the film) to make the best out of nothing.

I love all the films and the music in them. You would say that they are made by my company, so of course I will say that! But to prove myself, I am sharing with you the link of one of my favourite films – Krishnaveni.

You can see the other films on our website – www.vikrambawa.com or www.vikrambawafilms.com

When backing up data became child’s play..

Six Months! Six months is all I have spent in the company, but the experience I have gained has been immense. I am the one responsible for ensuring that all our official work is safely backed up after each and every shoot.

Things like renaming files (and when I say files, I mean hundreds of thousands of them) Initially I was completely baffled but slowly everything has been demystified.. Now I feel like I’m an absolute pro in my job.

So you need pictures shot ten years back?
No worries. Simply rub the lamp. The genie a.k.a. Kiran the ‘archiver’ will do the rest.

The day we shot the Twilight Players

I had been staring at my laptop screen for about an hour, cupcakes and a glass of milk lying next to me, thinking of what to write. I guess I was going through a case of writer’s
block. There is so much to write about everyday things that happen at work,
that it’s difficult to pick out one. So, I decided to just go through our
website vikrambawa.com. What I will say now is not because I work here, but because I truly feel this way: “I LOVE THE WEBSITE”.

Browsing through the videos, I came across the one on Twilight Players.

For the uninformed, Twilight Players is a team of three men, all boys at heart
– Sinbad Phgura, Ammo ‘Too Sweet’ and Jimi ‘The Quiff’. I never call them
dancers as that would just narrow their capabilities so much. They are
world class entertainers. They appeared with a BANG on the Indian scene in the
song ‘Pardesi’ of the movie Dev.D. They danced like no one ever had in
Hindi cinema. They, for a fact, made me want to learn dancing, and I did.

Check out the video to feel their energy. Styled by Jiah, this was an
awesome shoot. These guys wear shirts, trousers and suspenders – and dance.
Watch them being supremely animated and even playing tug-of-war. The video ends
with them looking super dapper. Trust Vikram Bawa to capture all this madness
in all its glory. Vikram shot photos and also made a stop motion video to go
with their dance style I have watched this video countless times, and still
can’t get enough.

And yes, you are welcome!

The shoot I loved

TBZ

This is my favourite jewellery shoot by Vikram.

Let me give you some inside news of what happened at this particular shoot.

The entire shoot lasted for more than 11 hours. Our sources confirmed that the Model, Vipasha Agarwal, was not at the best of her health. Then, a tiny mishap occurred, in which one of the light bulbs used by the production team just blew up and made a BOOM sound. Now that really scared the living daylights out of Vipasha.

However, Vipasha, the brave and courageous girl that she is, ensured that neither her illness nor the shock of the incident reflected in the gorgeous photos. A big kudos to Vikram, for ensuring that the ‘SHOW WENT ON’ and man.. what a show it was!

TBZ

See the pics for yourself!

The shoot was for TBZ and it won the 3rd prize at PX3 Prix De la Photographie, Paris. It’s not only award winning, but also one of those images which top my list of All TIME BEST PHOTOS.

Prateik ‘Chaplin’ Babbar

Video

Found a video of the very talented Bollywood actor, Prateik Babbar in our archives.

We were lucky to have DNA go along with our idea and let us emulate the great Charlie Chaplin with Prateik. What a fantastic actor he is to have completely justified the role of the iconic Mr. Chaplin.

The talented designer Priyanka Karunakaran was on board to recreate the complete look and supervise the photoshoot.

Hats off to the Films team for making this video so realistic.

Day 57

Vikram Bawa walks in.

Vikram: “Guys Woh Pehle waali File Better Thi” (Guys, the previous one was better.)

And, life goes on until we create something like this, to please our sweet perfectionist boss that Vikram is.

Kunwar Vikram Singh Bawa!

“Can we call it ‘K’?” The next obvious look on my face came with an obvious curiosity, “Does ‘K’ have any significant meaning in your life?” Like I said earlier, it was an obvious question. Initially, his reply was, “Nah… Just……!” But after repeating my question, thrice, he finally blurts it out, “My name actually is Kunwar Vikram Bawa. By lineage, my great-grandfather was a big zamindar in his days. So I am a Kunwar, you know, the Prince, before partition and all. And when I was born, my name originally was Kunwar Bawa, based on our holy book, Guru Granth Sahib, and then came Vikram Singh Bawa, and then the ‘Singh’ dropped off from there, and it became the popular version that it is today, Vikram Bawa. So I have been toying with the idea of using ‘K’.”

This wasn’t the end though. For those of you who don’t know this, when our boss walks into his office, he bows his head in front of the small mandir, does one parikrama with the ghanti in his hands, and then suddenly turns into a workaholic, with an incessant need for chai and food. That reminds me of Brad Pitt from the movie Ocean’s Eleven.

And then another conversation kicked off, definitely not about the marketing plan, but about names, numerology, astrology, followed by a long discussion on “What’s in a name?” (Vikram will elaborate on this later).

Vikram Bawa is a conversationalist, and loves to talk and debate about anything and everything. Like we have ‘connect the dots’, Vikram Bawa has ‘connecting thoughts’. With another thoughtful smile, yet another profound conversation starts, about God, spirituality, and the things he likes to do apart from holding the camera. And if you haven’t guessed it yet, his second love is driving. It is his second love because it took him 30 thoughtful seconds to answer this one. His wish list includes being an F1 driver, the oldest maybe.

Vikram Bawa on the driving seat reminds me of the popular song by Billy Joel, “Downeaster Alexa”. Well, minus the wife and children part, nonetheless. And if you have been in his car, with him on the driver’s seat, you know his speedometer never shows anything lower than 140! That’s Vikram Bawa, the Speedoholic!!

A meeting is how the conversation started, discussing the marketing plans, strategies and action items… Oh! We were actually discussing Twisted Heads, a quarterly coffee table book by Vikram Bawa!!!

So now you know how our conversations in office are: one thought, and another one, and then, yet another one, exactly like this blog post.

Think I’ve forgotten what we were discussing, and what I’m supposed to be writing about…

Client’s promises

I often wish that the promises made by our clients were kept. They say that the payment would be done within a week and if they were to truly release the payment within a week, my boss would be happy with my work.

But, do you know what happens when the clients do not keep their word? –
Client:  Ya Ma’am, the payment is in process. Sir/Mam has gone out of India will be back on Friday and your cheque would be ready on Monday.
Me:  Ok, I will be waiting for your call.

(Monday morning…)

Me: Hi, Megha here from Vikram Bawa’s office. Is our payment ready?
Client: No Ma’am. Sir did not come on Friday. Will be coming this week.
Me: Ok (sigh)

Now I have to deliver this news to Vikram…Just to be on the safer side, I keep his table clean and keep everything in its place. I make sure that  the hot coffee is ready before he reaches the office to cool him down! (These are the tips to make your boss a little happy before giving him the bad news)

Monday, 12noon –

Vikram Bawa: (Rings the bell) Meghaaaaaa.

Me: Ya sir
Vikram: Megha, what happened about the payment of ‘X’. You told me that we would be receiving on Monday.
Me: Ya sir, but when I called them in the morning they said that the payment would be done next week for sure.
Vikram
(calls everyone to his desk)

  • Digital team: Kya hua..touch up kar ke hua hai ke nahin? Guys I want my work to be completed on my timelines. I don’t know but you have to complete this before 7.00 pm and mail the pictures to the client
  • CGI team: You do one thing  for now, stop ‘X’ work and start ‘Y’ work and I want it to be completed within this week
  • Films: Show me the film that you have completed. Have you got the music done?

Accounts: I don’t care what happens, I want my payments. Now you guys better leave me alone and don’t mess up, or I will throw you out.

And this is what happens to us when a client keeps saying next week, and the week never comes. Till then I have to do all this Buttering and go through all the Suffering.. lol.

So Mr. X, Please make our payment.

The journey…

3 am in the morning, and I’ve just reached home from work.
I wonder what is it that drives a man to keep on going.. keep on trying.. keep on working.. to go towards the edge of reason to attain what he desires.
What is this madness that makes me work 20 hours a day, day after day, to achieve what I dream of.
Is it really that important to me. That important that the physical being is groaning, screeching, at what it has to endure.

Is it me!
Me, the human being,
me, the photographer,
or me, the spirit, which refuses to give up.

The spirit which only lives to enjoy, to soak itself into every possible reason of my existence, the existence as a photographer, as an artist, as a creator. Unrelenting!! in its pursuit of what it seeks. Seeks it does, of what, I yet know not. But find it, I shall, promises my soul to me.
Rest I shall not, till I do..

Because the journey as yet is too beautiful to not enjoy..

Editing my week away!

I have measured out my last week with editing tools! Literally.

We have been on some really good shoots continuously for the last two weeks with Vikram, and have been editing films that we shoot with every photo-shoot these days.

We shot with a jewellery brand, Shamita Shetty and LFW designer Nikhil Thampi. While we are done with editing the films for the jewellery brand, others are work-in-progress. To give you a peek into what we shot with Shamita, and before you get to see the final film, watch Behind the Scenes with Shamita.
